This was in the news earlier this year. It's testosterone. British researchers say surges of hormones could help explain why teams usually play better at home. They looked at soccer players, and measured their hormone levels before games that were played at home or away. It turns out that before a home game, their testosterone levels were considerably higher. Testosterone is linked to aggressive behavior and dominance displays in many animals, including humans, so it's possible that the home-field surge of hormones helps the team play better. http://exn.ca/Stories/2002/03/15/52.asp
