Where did 'mulligan' come from in the game of golf?

Question #21844. Asked by rsw. (Aug 25 02 7:27 PM)

    Barrow boy

On the internet, the following seems to be the consensus.

This golfing term for a free swing dates to 1949. The origin is unknown.
It would seem likely that there was once a really poor golfer named Mulligan whose partners would allow him extra strokes, but if true his identity is now lost to the ages.

There is a book that might help - The Historical Dictionary of Golfing Terms (Peter Davies, Robson Books, 1993).
