    I have coins dating from the 1890s which are from the South African Republic (Z.A.R.), so obviously South Africa was a republic on more than one occasion.

    In those days, the Cape Colony and Natal were colonies of the UK, whilst the Transvaal and Orange Free State were combined into a loose alliance under Afrikaans rule. This was the alliance that Britain would fight in the Boer War in 1899, the result of which was to integrate all four territories into the modern day South africa.

    The ZAR is what's commonly referred to as Transvaal, later incorporated into the Union of South Africa.

    The Republic of South Africa was declared on 31 May 1961 after a referendum on 5 October, 1960.
