That's MADDING not Maddening. Maddening enough if you have to study it, I grant you, but Madding means 'frenzied' whereas Maddening means 'to drive mad'. (There is a definition whereby they are equated, but 'maddening crowd' is not that sense, and is a quote from Gray.)
