Without wishing to be over-pedantic I should point out that Accrington FC, who were one of the original 12 members of the Football League in 1888, was not the same club as Accrington Stanley. The original Accrington club folded shortly after leaving the League in 1893.

Accrington Stanley were not as many believe founder members of the Football League. That honour belongs to Th' Owd Reds, Accrington FC. Founded in 1878, the club played for five seasons in the Football League, but upon relegation to Division Two, opted to withdraw from the League, joining the Lancashire League.

They played their first League game at Anfield Road, then home to Everton, and lost 1-2 on September 8, 1888. Th' Owd Reds played at Thorneyholme Road, still home to Accrington CC, and wore, of course, Red shirts. The last game as a League club was a 1-0 defeat at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, against Sheffield U. in a 'Test match' to decide relegation-promotion on April 22, 1893. After two seasons in the Lancashire League, The Owd Reds joined the Lancashire Combination, but withdrew after five matches, and folded shortly afterwards.

The formation details of Accrington Stanley are sketchy, but it is believed that the club was formed as Stanley Villa in 1891, so named because the originators lived on Stanley Street. The club took the name of the Town in 1893. In those days not everybody played in a League - remember the Football League, the oldest League in the world, was still only a few years old - and Stanley's first venture into organised football was through the Accrington and District League in 1894-95. The League consisted of just seven teams, Oswaldtwistle Wanderers, Knuzden, Baxenden, Huncoat, St.Augustine's, Bell's Temperance reserves and Stanley. A 2-1 defeat to Knuzden consigned the club to second place. That season saw Stanley compete also in the Northeast Lancashire Alliance.

    Last match!
On Friday 2 March Stanley travelled to Crewe for what turned out to be their last League match. Alex Smith was in goal as he had been all season, but had to make a car dash after missing the coach. The rest of that team read: Forrester, Gregory, Pickup, Wilson, Hamilton, Devine, Bennet, Bill Smith, Ferguson and Mulvey. The wintry conditions were difficult, it was close to a snow-storm, and old team-mate Terry Tighe almost gave Stanley a helping hand with a poor back-pass that was cleared off the line. But the twin-strikers Barry Wheatley and Frank Lord were too much to handle for the Stanley defense this day. Wheatley shot Alex ahead on 24 minutes, and midway into the the second half Lord headed home Tighe's corner. The strikers helped themselves to an extra goal apiece in the last five minutes for a 4-0 scoreline.

Who replaced Accrington Stanley in the Football League?

Accrington Stanley resigned from Division 4 of the Football League on Monday 6th March 1962 (see Q# 21933). Their last match, played on Saturday 3rd March 1962, was their 33rd game for the 1961-62 season, and their W-D-L 5-8-20 (goals 19-60) record was expunged. I've hit a brick wall trying to locate their next game, the 34th game of the 46 game season. What was their next game (aka which club got the bye)?
