What's the name of that film where the kid runs away from home and ends up living inside a tree and has a pet falcon or something like that?

A neighbor just told me he was paneling his living room with this deciduous wood, but I thought the name he called it referred to a conifer that grows only in eastern North America. Then I realized the soothing word I was hearing is an adjective that describes two very different trees. The one he plans to use is a confusingly close relative of a tree that joined the genome club a couple of years ago. What is he paneling his living room with, and what conifer was I thinking of?
