Why do we celebrate Saint Patrick's Day?

St. Patrick chased all the snakes out of Ireland with a stick. Also, he converted the locals to Christianity, thereby saving their souls, and earning him the title of Patron Saint of Ireland. St. Andrew is the equivilent patron saint of Scotland, and St. George is England's patron saint. Also, St. Patrick's Day is a good excuse to drink Guinness (if you need an excuse.)

Saint Patrick is most known for driving the snakes from Ireland. It is true there are no snakes in Ireland, but there probably never have been -- the island was separated from the rest of the continent at the end of the Ice Age.
Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.
