There are two things that make Gravity weaker at the equator. Firstly, the earth bulges outwards, so you are further from the centre of the earth than when you are at the pole. Secondly, because the earth is spinning, the force of gravity is counteracted by a slight 'centrifugal' force which reduces the effect of the gravity. There are also slight variations in gravity caused by different composition of rock under the surface of the earth. These are called gravity anomalies, and can be used by geologists to study the composition of the earth.
