How many people are considered to be members of the British royal family?

    Question #22113. Asked by Chuck.

11 people are considered to be members of the Royal family. That's not counting the dogs.

Not sure how helpful that is - that site lists 15 people, for starters, and doesn't count any of the grandchildren - and you can't say that Prince William (2nd in line to the throne) is not a member of the royal family, can you?

A lot of the definition depends on who is doing the considering. The tabloids tend to view 'minor royals' as still very much royal, so they include people like the Ogilvy family, the Hicks family, Princess Margaret's children and so on. The Civil List no longer exists in the form it used to, so you cannot judge from this, but it used to pay monies to all the Queen's children as well as a few other relatives. The immediate family consists of the Queen, Duke of Edinburgh, her four children and their 2 current spouses (the 2 ex spouses are not Royal - Mark Phillips seems to have detached himself from that life, the Duchess of York has not and still maintains a close family life with her children and occasionally her ex-husband, so her status is undefined), and the Queen's 6 grandchildren, a total of 12 or 14 people (if you count the Countess of Wessex and Timothy Lawrence, 15 if you count the Duchess of York). Then there are people like Princess Alice, daughter-in-law of George V and therefore the Queen's great-aunt by marriage (if I've counted right), and the Kent/Gloucester family who are the Queen's cousins (also descendants of George V). These people would be regarded as close family in MY family, so I guess the Queen probably thinks of them as close family too! Certainly they perform certain public duties each year...
