For what reason was a Fatwa placed on Naguib Mahfouz?

Question #22156. Asked by Dunc. (Sep 01 02 6:03 PM)

    Andy

Naguib Mahfouz was an Egyptian writer who wrote a book called Children of the Alley. This book portrayed Jesus Christ and the prophet Mohammed as working-class people. This came as a shock to believers of the Muslim faith, because they believed that Jesus and Mohammed were perfect and therefore were above the working class. His book was subsequently banned in every Arab country with the exception of Lebanon. Mahfouz was later the victim of an assassination attempt in which he received a severe stab wound to the neck. Luckily, Mahfouz survived the assassintaion attempt.
