I am sure we have had this before and the answer was The Ramones -- Joey, Dee Dee, Johnny, and Tommy Ramone started their band in 1974. The Ramones were the first punk band ever. They started it all. Their songs were short, simple, and often stupid, but they were still the single most influential and one of the best bands ever to be in the punk genre. The band went through several lineup changes, and unfortunately disbanded in 1996. On an even sadder note, Joey Ramone passed away in 2001 from lymphoma, and Dee Dee died in 2002 of an overdose. http://www.geocities.com/dazzlingdisplay/punkrockersguide_howto_bands.html

Yup we have had this before! New York Dolls are (in most popular music history books) acknowledged as the first Punk band - beating the Ramones by a short head. Again it depends which books you read.

This really all boils down to your definition of punk. NYD to me are a loud Glam band, not a Punk band, because the attitude is missing. The Ramones have a much stronger case under the UK 'definition' of punk. The Sex Pistols were a trend-riding band put together by a slick exploiter, but they were the major *commercial* success, which is pretty much oxymoronic for the punk ethic, surely? :-)
