Actually, the true meaning from a political science standpoint is a group of various political parties where no single political party has a majority (in parliament, etc). The poltical parties agree to form a government together and cooperate rather than hold elections until one party has a majority. Coalition governments are notoriously weak as there are many concessions among the members when formulating policy. Coalition government is composed of several parties joined together to form a government in order to secure a majority in the parliament for this government. The coalition would be made of parties close to the stand of the leading party in the coalition.
