When did Alaska become a state?

Although the Congressional proceedings to endorse Alaska's statehood commenced in January 1958, the declaration was not made until 3rd January 1959. On January 3, 1959, President Eisenhower signed the official declaration which made Alaska the 49th state. The new American flag featured seven rows of seven stars each. Same website as above.
