Where and what is the Manzanares?

Question #22559. Asked by princess. (Sep 12 02 3:23 AM)

http://www.castles.org/castles/Europe/Western_Europe/Spain/Manzanares/ would suggest that it is a castle in Spain near Madrid

Isn't it the river which flows through Madrid? Don't have a source (not a pun!!) for this, but remember from a visit some years ago.

It must be connected as it is in the same area although http://www.aboutmadrid.com/madrid/excursion.asp has the river spelt Manzanarez

Manzanares (this is the right spelling in Spanish) is the river that crosses Madrid. As well is a mountain, small one, close to Madrid and there are several villages with that name, for example, Manzanares del Real
