According to Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable: Khaki uniform was first used by an irregular corps of guides raised by the British at Meerut during the Indian Mutiny. They were known as the Khaki Risala ('khaki squadron'), and nicknamed the 'Mudlarks'. It was adopted as an active service uniform by several regiments and in the Omdurman campaign (1898), but was not generally introduced until the South African War of 1899 - 1902. The word is derived from an Urdu word meaning 'dust'.
