What is the meaning of the word RIDDINGS as in place names such as the Riddings library in Scunthorpe?

Question #22825. Asked by Ryry. (Sep 26 02 9:13 PM)

    Tabby Tom

    http://www.cogs.susx.ac.uk/users/richardc/ingasfinal.ps

According to the above site, the origin is:

RIDDINGS. A frequently found minor name with a history of at least 650 years ... From OE hryding (properly *ryding) 'assart', with a verbal base.

So it means an assart, i.e. a bit of forest which has been cleared and put to agricultural use. This is presumably what the Riddings area of Scunthorpe used to be.
