John Kerr was the first American to play in the top division of English football, when he played for Portsmouth in 1987-88 www.yanksformillwall.com/john_kerr.html

At the age of twenty, and already a US National team player, Kerr became the youngest ever recipient of the Soccer America 'player of the year' award. He became the first modern American to play professionally in England, paving the way for the likes of John Harkes and Kasey Keller. He played in the First division with Portsmouth before spending three productive years with Millwall (1st Division) where he became a fan favorite.
