many a times people say it turns white. I personally don't believe it, have not tried it, and don't want to experiment. I've kept fishes for 20 years now and have tortured countless number of fishes but never do so on purpose. =)

This site mentions several reasons why a goldfish might lose its colour, poor diet and old age being most common. It also says their colour will alter slightly according to their surroundings. 'So if a goldfish is placed in an aquarium or pond containing light coloured gravel, or a pale background, it will become less intensively coloured. Conversely in dark surroundings the fish will become more darkly coloured. Such 'tricks' as varying background colour are often used by aquarists who show their fish, in order to obtain the best colouration from their fish.' http://www.tetra-fish.co.uk/nonflash/goldfish/colour.html

It wouldn't change colour much, the temperature of the water would affect the coulor more. It would live in the dark room as long as you feed it and change the water.
