This is how you compute quarterback ranking: 1. Completed passes divided by pass attempts. Subtract 0.3 and multiply by 5. 2. Passing yards divided by pass attempts. Subtract 3 and divide by 4. 3. Touchdown passes divided by pass attempts. Multiply by 20. 4. Interceptions divided by pass attempts. Multiply by 25 and then subtract from 2.375. 5. Add the sum of the four categories. Multiply by 100 and divide by six. For example, let's say a quarterback completes 20 of 36 passes for 248 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Here is how we compute the quarterback rating. 1. 20/36= .556 .556-.3= .256 .256x5= 1.278 2. 248/36= 6.889 6.889-3= 3.889 3.889/4= .972 3. 2/36= .056 .056x20= 1.12 4. 2/36= .056 .056x25= 1.389 2.374-1.389= .986 5. 1.278+.972+1.12+.986= 4.356 4.356x100= 435.6 435.6/6= 72.6 72.6 would be the quarterback's rating for that game. The lowest rating one can have is 0 and the highest a quarterback rating can be is 158.3. In a season, the highest average quarterback rating was 112.8, set by Steve Young in 1994. The 49ers won the Super Bowl that year. Steve Young also holds the record for highest average quarterback rating in a career, with a 97.0 average rating.
