Do insects - say locusts - have apon themselves meat?

    Question #23111. Asked by Tommy.

    Kainantu

Using the EU definition of meat where it restricts the definition of meat to the skeletal-attached muscles then, because a locust has a skeleton (exoskeleton)---- ( pushing the definition here!)locusts/insects have meat in them.

Using the Jewish religion, locusts are 'meat'

    'Permissible and unpermissible meat.
Animals are divided into four major categories for permissibility Mammals, Fish , Birds and Insects.
The Torah lists four types of locust that are considered kosher.
Kosher is Hebrew meaning 'fit'. (being ritually fit) to eat.'

    Notes:

The only current EU definition of meat makes no distinction between muscle-meat, fat and offal.

It restricts the definition of meat to the skeletal-attached muscles. Other parts of animals for human consumption, such as offal (heart, intestine, liver, etc.) or fat, will now have to be labelled as such and not as 'meat'.

However, there is provision for a certain part of the fat content, where it adheres to the muscles, to be treated as meat, subject to maximum limits laid down in the directive

The thorax ( of the locust) is made up of three somites: prothorax, mesothorax, and metathorax, each bearing a pair of legs.

Collins English Dictionary: Somite:...develops into muscle and bone in the adult.( sadly only in vertebrates )
