I read that the divisions of various countries of the world are called states (USA), provinces (Philippines) and prefectures (Japan). How do they differ....are there any more....how are other countries divided?

France is divided into departements (with an acute accent on the first e). For some time now departements have been grouped into regions for administrative purposes. The UK is divided into counties: local government has been 'reformed' so many times in the last 40 years that some counties no longer have an administrative function. Austria, like Germany, is divided into Lander (with an umlaut on the a)

The online CIA World Factbook will tell you the administrative divisions for each country. Click on a country, scroll down to the 'Government' section, and under 'Administrative Divisions' you'll find the native word (in the singular and plural) and the conventional English equivalent. The factbook is at http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/
