How many Boeing 747s have been built and how many are flying at any one time world-wide (please quote source)?

Question #23236. Asked by bean. (Oct 14 02 4:06 PM)

    Barrow boy

The number of Boeing 747s built is as follows.
    100 series 250
    200 series 393
    300 series 81
    400 series 555 to date
Specials 15 eg Air Force One
Total 1294. As this is taken from Boeing Corporation's website, you can expect it to be up to date.

The total still flying on a given day is more difficult to come by. Some have been written off, and at any given point in time others are undergoing services. However, a news article back in July 2000 estimated the figure at 1200.

So if 1200 are flying on any given day, how many are in the air at any one time? British Airways states that its 747s are utilised 13.66 hours per day (56.7 percent). If BA is typical then there will be 680 actually in the air at any one time on average.
