What does 'curbs in' mean on the Stock Market channels on TV?

Question #23425. Asked by an alias. (Oct 20 02 4:05 PM)

    Tabby Tom

It means that program trading is restricted because of a big fluctuation in the market index. I'm not sure whether it happens on exchanges other than New {York;} I don't think there is any such restriction on trading in London.

Stock Market reports refer to the London FTSE100. Will someone please enlighten me as to what those letters stand for? I gather the last two are an abbreviation of "Stock Exchange" and I'm thinking the first two may represent "Futures Trading."
