Gmack mentioned the word 'smithereens' in a previous post, and I'm curious as to where the phrase comes from, and to what smithereens are. (Of course I've heard and used the phrase a plethora of times, but never thought about it literally until now.) Any ideas?

What fish are kippers generally made from and how are they prepared?
