What is the difference between a fruit and vegetable?

Botanically, a fruit is defined as the ripened ovary of a seed-bearing plant, so tomatoes, eggplants (aka aubergines) and peppers, among others, would fall into that particular category.
A vegetable, on the other hand, is defined as a plant cultivated for its root, leaves, or stem, thus rhubarb, although used as a fruit, is strictly speaking, a vegetable.
