When writting numbers, when should one print out the number (i.e. two) - and when should one use the digit (i.e. 2)?

Question #23752. Asked by Jim. (Oct 31 02 5:49 PM)

Question 23744 is a good example.

I have twelve envelopes numbered 1 through 12, and twelve cards numbered 110 through 121. Can I place one card inside each envelope so that the number in the envelope divides the number on the card inside it?

Until you get up to twenty, write the numbers out. After twenty, although many people would say to use numerals, it is purely optional.

My copy of the 'Economist' Style Book - a very reliable authority - says to use figures from 11 upwards and for all numbers that include a decimal point, but never to start a sentence with a numeral - write the number in words.

It goes on to say always use numbers for references to pages, for percentages and in sets of numerals (e.g. deaths from this cause in the last three years were 14, 9 and 6)

There isn't any Academy of English language at any of the English speaking countries like those in French Spanish Hebrew etc. so there are no rules do what you want. Those Academies usually don't concern themselves with questions of style.

The number 1920212223...939495 consists of 154 digits, and was arrived at by placing the numbers from 19 to 95 one after the other. If I now remove 95 of the digits in such a way that the resulting number is the greatest possible, what are the first digits of the 59-digit number that remains?

Is it possible to use ten digits 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 0 to construct a ten-digit number divisible (without a remainder) by all the numbers from 2 to 18?

Take any positive whole number not greater than 50. If the number is even, divide it by two. If the number is odd, multiply it by 3, and add 1 to the result. Apply the same method to the resulting number, and continue in this way forming a chain of numbers untill you finally arrive at the number 1.Shown below is a chain of numbers that results from this method if you begin with 15: 15 - 46 - 23 - 70 - 35 - 106 - 53 - 160 - 80 - 40 - 20 - 10 - 5 - 16 - 8 - 4 - 2 - 1. As you can see, the number 15 requires 17 steps to end up at 1. Of the numbers not greater then 50, which takes the longest to reach the number 1?
