    When added together, the ages of Josephine and her sister Constance come to 30. In 14 years' time, Josephine will be three times as old as Constance is today. How old are Constance and Josephine?

    		Josephine is 19 and Constance is 11.

    Given the two equations

    J + C = 30
    J + 14 = 3C or J = 3C - 14

    Substituting for J in the first we have

    3C - 14 + C = 30 or 4C = 44 giving C = 11,

    and substituting that in either of the original equations gives us J = 19.
