Pierre Omidyar had a web consulting and freelance technology company, which he had named Echo Bay Technology Group. The name was not a reference to {anything;} 'It just sounded cool,' Omidyar said. When he tried to register EchoBay.com, however, he found Echo Bay Mines was already using that domain name. So he registered the next best thing: eBay.com The precursor to eBay the auction website, was AuctionWeb, and it was one of three companies that Omidyar was running under the ebay.com domain. To access the auction site, people typed in www.ebay.com/aw, which was {confusing;} and typing in auctionweb.com went to somebody else's website. AuctionWeb started on Labor Day in {1995;} two years later it was completely overhauled and on September 1, 1997, the name AuctionWeb was retired and eBay began, as the only company under the ebay.com domain name. (The above is loosely taken from The Perfect Store by Adam Cohen, which is a totally cool anecdotal book about eBay.) http://pub4.ezboard.com/frainyday30539ebaygoodguys.showMessage?topicID=319.topic
