Can someone assist me in finding information about the history or invention of the Umbrella?

Question #23907. Asked by Doing Research. (Nov 04 02 12:50 PM)

    Jack Flash

The Dictionary of Inventions and Discoveries edited by E F Carter has this to say:

UMBRELLA (parasol) circa 1578 in use in Italy. 1616 first mention of umbrella in England in comedy by Ben Jonson. 1622 in Paris. 1709 improved by Marius (France) similar to modern umbrella. Pre-1835 Carey invented collapsible metal frame. (Later improvement by Deacon and J G Hancock, of Birmingham). 1850 alapaca first used for umbrellas.

I hope this may assist your research.

The most comprehensive website I have found is the following:
    http://www.regencylibrary.com/articles/umbrella.htm

It considers all sorts of social aspects that other sites do not mention.
