From what culture came the sock?

    Question #23920. Asked by Adam.

    Barrow boy

Hand knitting (the prerequisite for making socks) was invented in the Middle East sometime in the third century. Garments have been found in the ruined city of Dura Europos, abandoned by the Macedonians in 256AD, but it cannot be established whether they were socks! Certainly socks were used by the Egyptians in the Coptic Period (4th to 7th centuries).

Sock: noun 1. a short stocking usually reaching to the calf or just above the ankle. 2. a lightweight shoe worn by ancient Greek and Roman actors.
The origin: The noun foot covering originally meant light shoe, and went back ultimately to Greek sukkhos, a word possibly borrowed from an Asiatic language. Latin took this over as soccus, which was then borrowed into prehistoric Germanic as sok. And this in turn evolved into German socke, Dutch zok, Swedish socka, Danish sok, and English sock.
