# A little bird weighing 5 ounces is sleeping in a cage. We put the cage on a scale and it weighs a pound. The bird then wakes up and starts flying all over the cage. What will the scale indicate when the bird is in the air?

Question #23981. Asked by Buck. (Nov 06 02 6:36 AM)

Gnomon

It will weigh almost one pound. As the bird flies around, most of its weight will be transferred to air it pushes downwards, which will push against the bottom of the cage keeping the weight nearly the same. But some of the force of the bird's wings will transfer outwards through the wire of the cage into the surrounding air, so the weight will be reduced. If the bird was kept in a sealed glass container, the weight would be exactly the same when the bird was flying.
