A man was telling me on a particular occasion, 'The day before yesterday I was 35 years old and next year I will turn 38.' How can this be?

It is the 1st of January and he was born at midnight on New Year's Eve. Yesterday he was 35, today he is 36, next New Year's Day he will be 37, and at the very end of next year, he will turn 38.
