A newspaper article said it had only happened twice since the Civil War, but never to the GOP. These, I believe, are the two occasions. In 1892, incumbent Harrison lost to Grover Cleveland in a dramatic turn around of historic importance. For the first time in the nation's history, the two presidential candidates had both been president. Cleveland's victory, moreover, returned a defeated president for a second term to the White House%97a historic first that has never been repeated. The Democrats also regained control of both chambers of Congress. http://www.americanpresident.org/kotrain/courses/BH/BH_Campaigns_and_Elections.htm At other times, especially during crucial periods in the nation's history, Americans have voted for strong, undivided government. This was the case, for example, in 1932 when the country was facing the Great Depression. In that year, the people elected not only Democratic President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) but they also voted in an overwhelmingly Democratic Congress. The Democrats won 313 seats in the House of Representatives that year and 59 seats in the Senate. http://usinfo.state.gov/journals/itdhr/1000/ijde/process.intro.htm
