A lady arrives at a hotel where rooms are {$10} per night. When she checks in, she does not have enough money, but she offers to pay with a clasped gold braclet. The braclet has seven links, each valued at {$10.} What would be the fewest number of CUTS necessary to let her stay for one week if she wants to pay one day at a time?

Question #24078. Asked by Tim. (Nov 08 02 4:05 AM)

    Gnomon

    One cut.

If she cuts the third link, she now has three pieces consisting of 1 link (open), 2 links and 4 links. She can now pay for each day one day at a time by exchanging links with the hotel owner:

    Day 1 - pay 1 link
Day 2 - take back 1 link, pay 2 links
    Day 3 - pay 1 link
Day 4 - take back all links and pay 4 links
    Day 5 - pay 1 link
Day 6 - take back 1 link, pay 2 links
    Day 7 - pay 1 link
