Why when TV shows credit their main cast do they always seem to list only the names of the actors but when it comes to the last actor they throw in the name of his or her character as well?

This has always been a mystery to me too. One example that springs immediately to mind is the opening sequence of that dreadful eighties soap 'Dynasty'. The last cast member to be credited was 'Joan Collins as Alexis'. Wish I knew why....

Where and how an actors' and actress' name appears in the credits are part of their contract and appear the way they want them to. The bigger the actor the more clout they have regarding this. The saying 'having your name above the title' means as an actor, you have a lot of power in the show biz world. The pecking order is, above the title, first then second or same time with another actor after the title, alphabetical order, and as the last. Then there are words like starring and co-starring. Actors that come into a show after the first few seasons as a new character nearly always request their names be last saying 'and 'so and so' as 'so and so',' since it attracts more attention. No source, it's just one of those things I know.

Also listed last will be a cameo or special appearance by a guest star. Another case is a particluar character who doesn't appear in every episode.
