Birds are used as a metaphor for nest building (creating a home and family) and bees are a metaphor for procreation (ie: pollin is to bees as sperm is to humans). I don't think anyone actually uses birds and bees to explain the facts of life to kids anymore (if ever). The expression is just used as a way of referring to that heart to heart talk that fathers have with their sons and that mothers have with their daughters. But, it really doesn't mean that fathers and mothers actually use birds and bees as analogies when explaining all of this to their kids.
