According to Scottish legend and Sir Walter Scott's Robin Hood of the Border, he was a real person named John Armstrong of Gilnockie (aka Johnnie Gilnockie)

Johnnie Gilnockie (John Armstrong) could be called a Scottish Robin Hood; so could Rob Roy (Robert MacGregor). Neither is generally thought to be the basis for the English Robin Hood legends (some of which were already in existence before the lifetimes of those men anyway!).
There are also various possible candidates for an English historical Robin Hood; none have ever been absolutely proven...so far.
