In history many monarchs have been known as King and Queen. I can understand that because Queen Elizabeth II was an heir to the throne that her husband would be known as Prince and not a King, but what would happen if it was reversed and a male was the King, would his wife be called Queen or Princess?

Question #24635. Asked by Simon. (Nov 27 02 4:11 PM)

She would be Queen Consort. The late Queen Mother was Queen Elizabeth while King George VI was King, (but she had no regnal number, unlike Queen Elizabeth II who is Queen in her own right). When he died she became known as Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

Jac - I think it may ge a little more convoluted than your expanation. The wife of the King is a Queen (regardless of wether she is a reigning monarch or not it's a title which is bestowed)Queen Elizabeth the Queenn Mother would have had the title of Dowager Duchess of Windsor, or somesuch title had it not been for the fact that she outlived all the other members of her family and because here name was the samne as her daughters the title Queen Mother became the acknowledged title.

The wife of the reigning King is the Queen Consort. Hence the wife of King George VI was Queen Elizabeth. The husband of the reigning Queen is not of course the King Consort, he is merely the consort of the Queen. The Queen Mother, ie the mother of the reigning sovereign, is always known as {such;} prior to the late Queen Mother Elizabeth, Queen Mary (widow of King George V) was the Queen Mother and on the death of her son King George VI she became the Dowager Queen Mother.

What has always intrigued me is what would happen, in terms of title and status, if our present Queen died before her husband Philip. There is no precedent for this.

Why could Princess Diana of England have become queen someday, whereas Prince Phillip can't become Queen Elizabeth's king?

If Prince Philip should happen to outlive Queen Elizabeth what would his title be? In the last hundred years we have had Queen Mothers (Alexandra, Mary and Elizabeth) but no male royal survivor.

How does the line of succession in royalty work, does the child have to be born? If the Queen had already died and Charles was King, and he had got Diana pregnant but then died during her pregnancy, who would succeed, Charles's unborn heir, or the nearest alive male relative, i.e. Prince Andrew? And if Andrew did become King, what would the position be of Diana's and Charles's son when born?
