In history many monarchs have been known as King and Queen. I can understand that because Queen Elizabeth II was an heir to the throne that her husband would be known as Prince and not a King, but what would happen if it was reversed and a male was the King, would his wife be called Queen or Princess?

She would be Queen Consort. The late Queen Mother was Queen Elizabeth while King George VI was King, (but she had no regnal number, unlike Queen Elizabeth II who is Queen in her own right). When he died she became known as Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

Jac - I think it may ge a little more convoluted than your expanation. The wife of the King is a Queen (regardless of wether she is a reigning monarch or not it's a title which is bestowed)Queen Elizabeth the Queenn Mother would have had the title of Dowager Duchess of Windsor, or somesuch title had it not been for the fact that she outlived all the other members of her family and because here name was the samne as her daughters the title Queen Mother became the acknowledged title.

The wife of the reigning King is the Queen Consort. Hence the wife of King George VI was Queen Elizabeth. The husband of the reigning Queen is not of course the King Consort, he is merely the consort of the Queen. The Queen Mother, ie the mother of the reigning sovereign, is always known as {such;} prior to the late Queen Mother Elizabeth, Queen Mary (widow of King George V) was the Queen Mother and on the death of her son King George VI she became the Dowager Queen Mother. What has always intrigued me is what would happen, in terms of title and status, if our present Queen died before her husband Philip. There is no precedent for this.
