What percent of alcohol constitutes 60 proof?

Question #24676. Asked by Shannon. (Nov 29 02 4:46 PM)

    Tabby Tom

In the U. S., proof spirit is 50 per cent alcohol by volume, and a spirit that is 60 degrees proof will therefore contain 30 per cent alcohol.

In the U. K., the proof system has officially been abandoned, and strength is now shown as percentage of alcohol by volume. Under the old British proof system, 60-proof spirit would have contained a little over 34 per cent alcohol.
