Place a burning candle between the oppositely charged poles of a high-voltage generator of static electricity. The flame will be mysteriously attracted toward the negatively charged pole and repelled from the positive pole. Any explanation?

Question #24817. Asked by Claus. (Dec 04 02 4:20 PM)

    Barrow boy

The candle flame is rich in positive ions, and if the positive terminal of the electrostatic machine is placed near the flame there is an electrostatic force of repulsion acting on the flame, pushing it away from the terminal. Similarly, the negative terminal will attract the candle flame... but that's how fires are started!
