Esau was the oldest son of Issac, so his birthright was to be the head of his father's estate. However, one day Esau was very hungry and he sold his birthright to Jacob (his younger brother) for some food.

Esau and Jacob were the twin sons of Isaac and Rebekah - as the firstborn son Esau would succeed Isaac as head of the family and inherit a double share of the estate - but coming in from the fields starving hungry one day Jacob was cooking a stew and the condition for allowing Esau to eat was to give Jacob his birthright in exchange for food. Genesis 25
