From http://www.multied.com/elections/1852.html 'At the Democratic convention in 1852 there were four leading candidates, Lewis Cass, James Buchanan, Stephen Douglas and William Marcy. The convention was hopelessly deadlocked. On the thirty-fifth ballot Franklin Pierce was put forth as a candidate. He was nominated unanimously on the forty-ninth ballot.
