The Pope is only infallible when speaking 'ex cathedra' on matters of faith. He's not considered infallible on trivia questions, personal opinions, history tests, general knowledge, etc. He's not even infallible on matters of faith when not speaking 'ex cathedra'.

Since the pope declared himself infallible, he has very rarely spoken 'ex cathedra'. The present pope has never spoken in that way so nothing he says is considered to be infallible.
