Scientists have never figured out why the planets rotate at the speed they do. The moon rotates at a speed determined by its speed around the Earth, because it is locked into a synchronous orbit by tidal forces. But the planets themselves seem to rotate at various different speeds not related to their size or position. Venus is the same size as Earth but rotates so slowly that its day is longer than its year.
