Coronary artery bypass graft surgery is the procedure performed when narrowing (stenosis), or blockage occurs in the arteries that provide blood supply to the heart itself. Once your doctor finds that your coronary arteries are diseased, you may need bypass surgery to prevent a heart attack. A heart attack or Myocardial Infarction (MI) occurs when there is not enough blood supply getting to the heart muscle. Coronary artery bypass surgery may also be done to correct this blockage after a heart attack has occurred. The bypass surgery is done by removing a vein from the leg to use as a replacement artery, or by using the internal mammary artery in the chest to create a detour around the blockage. Your surgeon may also choose to remove the radial artery in the lower arm to use as the bypass graft. The bypass procedure may be defined by the number of grafts that are needed to bypass the diseased arteries. For example, double bypass, triple bypass or quadruple bypass. http://www.edwards.com/PatientsAndFamilies/MyHeart/ClinicalProcedures/CoronaryBypass.aspx
