Formula One, the years 1971, 1993, 1994. The connection ?

    Question #25136. Asked by sequoianoir.

Don't know about quiz or not, but its a repeat from a couple days before Christmas...I remember rummaging around and not finding an answer I was willing to submit.

It is NOT a repeat, this is the original post.
It has been languishing in the unanswered list for almost a month!
Perhaps I should give a clue.
It is as much down to the previous years in each case as it is the years specified !

Aha! I reckon that these are years in which the reigning champion has not been present for the start of the season:

1970 - Champion: Jochen Rindt (Killed during 1970 season, having already won the title)
    1992 - Nigel Mansell (Retired)
    1993 - Alain Prost (Retired)

    Good question!
(Great question if you say that's right!)

Strictly speaking Nigel Mansell only retired from Formula One, not motor racing as a driver which Alain Prost did.
In 1993 he competed in Indycar setting numerous new records and achievements.

Most IndyCar poles in a rookie season (7 in 1993)
Only person to win consecutive Formula 1 and Indy Car titles
Only person to hold Formula 1 and Indy Car titles at same time.
First person to win IndyCar title in first season
Fastest lap of a racing circuit (235.5 mph at Michigan in 1994)

But for a brush of the wall in the closing laps of the 1993 Indianapolis 500, Mansell came within a hair's breadth of becoming just the 4th Formula One World Champion in history to drink the fabled milk of Indy.
