    What are some other names for manholes (i.e. little round covered holes that lead into the sewer system)?

    		I don't know a proper name for them other than sewage access covers. The borough of Lambeth did at one time declare that it was politically incorrect to call them manholes and that they were to be called personholes.

    		I remember in politically-correct Eighties Britain they were sometimes referred to as 'inspection covers'.

    		'Inspection chambers' is the politically correct term I heard.

    Billy Connolly does an hilarious skit on political correctness, in which he refers to them as 'personholes', before embarking upon one of his superb monologued open tirades against the people who proliferate that kind of terminology.
