In a sporting context, what does a flag with yellow and red diagonal stripes indicate?

    Question #25300. Asked by Justasking.

    sequoianoir

US sailing regulations allow for the use of a flag (red and yellow diagonal stripes) which requires all sailors to wear life jackets when flown.

Have a look at a motor racing site. I found it straight away.

    Clithers.
Motor racing uses a red and yellow striped flag for oil or slippery track surface BUT the STRIPES are NOT DIAGONAL !

Yes it does, but have another look at the other flags in motor racing - I have a son who works for McClaren's track team. There is a flag with yellow and red DIAGONAL stripes!

Shows this flag stands for the letter 'Y' in the international marine signal flag system used by ships at sea.

Perhaps you could provide a link that shows this flag you describe in motor racing?
I used to be a race marshal for national and International motor cycling events and have waved many of the flags myself at several race circuits.
I have also been a guest at motor racing marshal posts courtesy of the car marshals themselves.
None of the cicuits ever had a a red and yellow diagonal striped flag in their collection even though all of them held several varieties of motor racing car events.
None of the links below show the flag you describe!

www.angelfire.com/ms/touringcar/flags/meaning.html is where I confirmed this after my son told me - he said he had asked David Coulthard! so it is kind of from the horse's mouth. If he doesn't know motor racing in the UK really is in trouble.

Clithers - the URL you supplied doesn't work.
Here is the beginners guide at formula1.com, again no diagonal red/yellow flag!

I've just tried it and it worked, honestly!

    Thanks clithers.
However as it turns out I have already visited an identical web page at a different URL a few days ago.
Unfortunately the 'red and yellow diagonal flag' DOES NOT HAVE STRIPES ON IT !
It is a red triangle and a yellow triangle obviously having a diagonal join !
Do you seriously think that flag is STRIPED ?

I think you win! Thanks for the correction. My son has had his neck wrung although I thing I explained the question to him wrongly - he really does work with David Coulthard.

Just to put a further spook in the wheel. I didn't think the motorsport flag was striped until I found another site that makes flags (can't remember the URL) and they had some flags with triangles, like the one mentioned by Clithers, which they referred to as 'striped'!

What was that about a ghost in the wheel? I meant a spoke! I'm cracking up under the pressure of trying to find answers to the CAB quiz!!
