    Who was asked to play Dorothy in 'The Wizard of Oz' before Judy Garland?

    		It was Shirley Temple but she couldn't being under contract to FOX. Judy Garland already worked for MGM so got the role.

    Established 20th Century Fox's star Shirley Temple was considered for the Garland Kansas farmgirl role (but the studio refused to loan her out to MGM), as was W.C. Fields for the role of the Wizard, and Gale Sondergaard as the Wicked Witch. Universal's Deanna Durbin was also considered to play the lead role of Dorothy.
