    EIGHT.
The original poem ''Twas the night before Christmas' or
(or A Visit from St. Nicholas) by Clement Clarke Moore.

    Contains the verse:

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles, his courses they came,
and he whistled and shouted and called them by name:

    'Now Dasher! Now Dancer!
    Now, Prancer and Vixen!
    On, Comet! On, Cupid!
    On, Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch!
To the top of the wall!
    Now dash away! Dash away!
    Dash away all!'

Clement Clarke Moore's famous poem, which he named 'A Visit From St. Nicholas,' was published for the first time on December 23, 1823 by a New York newspaper, the Sentinel. Since then, the poem has been reprinted, translated into innumerable languages and circulated throughout the world.
Legend says he wrote on Christmas Eve in 1822 during a sleigh ride home from Greenwich Village after buying a turkey for his family. Some say the inspiration for Moore's pot-bellied St. Nicholas was the chubby, bewhiskered Dutchman who drove Moore to Greenwich Village to buy his holiday turkey. Moore never copyrighted his poem, and only claimed as his own over a decade after it was first made public.

    The 'ninth' ?
Although he's a good friend of Santa's, Rudolph was not one of the original reindeer. He came later with the popular Christmas song, 'Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer.'

    Rudolph didn't exist until 1949 !!!!

    SONG: Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen,
Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen,
    But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all?
    Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
    Had a very shiny nose,
And if you ever saw it,
You could even say it glows.
    All of the other reindeer
    Used to laugh and call him {names;}
    They never let poor Rudolph
    Join in any reindeer games.
    Then one foggy Christmas Eve,
    Santa came to say:
Rudolph with your nose so bright,
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?'
Then how the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee,
    Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,
    You'll go down in history.'

    So, what happened to Rudolph?

    Dec 21 02, 7:02 PM
    Gnomon

Eight reindeer in the original poem, including Donder (a Dutch name) not Donner (a German name). Rudolph was not one of the original eight, because all of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names. Then one foggy Christmas Eve... and the rest is history. Or rather, mythology. Rudolph went on to lead the reindeer and become the ninth.
